NEW YORK BAR FOUNDATION AWARDS $600,000 IN GRANTS

The New York Bar Foundation announced more than $600,000 in charitable and educational grants to nearly 100 legal services organizations across the state. The grants help fund organizations that help New Yorkers in every region of the state.

“We received over 100 grant applications to assist groups with a range of issues like access to education, COVID 19 recovery, domestic violence prevention, family and elder law assistance and human trafficking to name a few,” said Foundation President Carla M. Palumbo.

The Foundation allocated more than $162,000 to the New York State Bar Association for pro bono appeals, attorney well-being and the New York State High School Mock Trial. Grants last year helped more than 160,000 New Yorkers with legal needs.

“Thanks to our generous donors, we have been able to distribute at least one grant in the 9 judicial districts that applied,” said Lucia Whisenand, chair of the Foundation’s Grants Review Committee. “It is personally fulfilling to see how the Foundation’s work helps our neighbors and fellow New Yorkers from Brooklyn to Buffalo, Hudson to Horseheads.”

The Foundation grants typically range from $5,000 to $15,000 for each recipient.  June Castellano, vice-chair of the Grants Review Committee, says the money can do more than just fund programs. “The funding serves as an important tool for organizations to attract additional funding from other sources.”

“The generosity of fellows, state bar association members, and our donors makes our work possible,” Palumbo said. “We are happy to be able to make a difference for these nonprofit organizations.”
